Enchanting Winter Wedding at The Shard: Capturing Pure Magic
Wedding stories are best viewed in a bespoke Wedding Story Book. Recently, the opportunity arose to photograph a stunning winter wedding at The Shard, Europe’s tallest building. Naturally, I jumped at the chance. I knew exactly how I would frame the narrative to capture the magic of the day.
It was a crisp December morning, and the winter air was biting at my feet. However, as I stepped into the lobby to be escorted to the top, I quickly defrosted. Shaking off the winter chill, the lift flew me up what felt like 100 floors in a matter of seconds. At times, the ascent felt even faster than the lifts at the Empire State Building.
As you step out of the lift onto the open-plan floor, London is literally at your feet. The venue offers a nearly 360-degree view of the capital. Although the city below was bustling, the hotel remained an oasis of calm. Consequently, the wedding had a great vibe from the start. We captured everything from the laughter in the bridal suite to the sincerity of the groom’s preparations.
The event was small and intimate, with only 40 of their nearest and dearest in attendance. Specifically, the ceremony was presided over by the bridesmaid of honour, who was also a registered celebrant. Because the guest list was small, every moment felt deeply personal. This is exactly how we told the final story in a custom, luxury wedding story book.

7 Secrets for a Winter Wedding at Shangri-La The Shard
If you are planning your own celebration at this iconic heights, here is how to ensure your photography is as breathtaking as the view.
- Master the early sunset. In winter, the sun sets as early as 4:00 PM. Therefore, you should plan your portraits during the blue hour when the city lights begin to glow.
- Manage the glass reflections. The floor-to-ceiling windows can act as mirrors at night. Fortunately, an experienced photographer knows the specific angles to avoid catching internal hotel lights in your skyline shots.
- Utilise the grand staircase. The double-height windows here provide a legendary backdrop. In fact, it is the perfect spot for a dramatic bridal entrance or editorial portraits.
- Explore the intimate rooms. While the ballroom is grand, the smaller Yi and Li rooms offer incredible views of Tower Bridge. Essentially, these provide a more private, cinematic setting for smaller ceremonies.
- The infinity pool photo op. The Sky Pool on Level 52 is the highest in Western Europe. Occasionally, we can arrange a quick shoot here for a truly unique photo that feels like you are floating in the clouds.
- Embrace the mist. Do not worry about a grey London day. Instead, use the mist to create a moody, romantic atmosphere that feels secluded from the city below.
- Coordinate your cultural traditions. The Shangri-La team is excellent at handling Asian and fusion weddings. Whether you are planning a Nikah or a modern reception, the venue handles the complexity of cultural rituals with ease.
